Photography Statement:  I go toward what attracts me and photograph it as directly as possible. My projects arise out of this simple method. Over time I photograph my subjects – which sometimes become obsessions -- again and again in every possible way. Some projects never end. Others fade away when I begin repeating myself, and I discover a new interest.

I agree with Garry Winnogrand that "There is nothing more mysterious than a fact clearly stated." But none of us are really photographing facts. I'm photographing the light that Walt Whitman in "Leaves of Grass" describes as "…silently wrapping all/ Nature’s amelioration blessing all/The blossoms, fruits of ages, orchards divine and certain/Forms, objects, growths, humanities, to spiritual images ripening."

Day job: I work as a photo editor at Environmental Defense, a national advocacy group headquartered in New York. I publish my own pictures and acquire more for ED publications. You can see our publications  here and here . I am also a senior writer and editor at Environmental Defense.

Writing:  Since 1973, I have published journalism and criticism regularly and made part or all of my living as a writer and editor. A sample of my published fiction can be found online at Blue Moon Review.  A collection of my fiction and non-fiction is available here.

Teaching:  With Mel Rosenthal I recently taught workshops in documentary photography and women in photography at Empire State College. From 1977-1980 I taught photography and photojournalism at the Mendocino coast campus of College of the Redwoods.
