| John Rae -- Madagascar
& Bangladesh: In
2002 this New York-based
photographer went with UNICEF delegations to videotape
&
shoot stills of nutrition & sanitation programs on
Madagascar
& in Bangladesh. As usual, he delivered the
professional
goods. At the same time he demonstrated that photojournalism
&
art are often the same thing. |

| Mel Rosenthal -- A Community of
Many Worlds: Arab
Americans in NYC:
Starting before the attacks of September 11th, this New
York-based
photodocumentarian and teacher began making black and
white portraits
of New Yorkers who trace their roots to the
Arabic-speaking
countries of the Middle East and North Africa. His
straightforward
but sensitive portrayals stand against crude stereotypes
that
have gained ground since the attacks. |
|
| Frank Jump -- Fading divas:
For the
last 5 years or so this Brooklyn artist & elementary school teacher has been absorbed in a photo
project
called the Fading Ad
Campaign
"...documenting vintage mural ads on building
brickfaces
in New York City spanning nearly a century." His
photos
are fascinating historically, politically, sociologically,
but
I love them mostly because they're beautiful. |
