Why add iodine to salt?  In an informal, totally unscientific poll of friends and family I found that no one could recall.

Iodine deficiency can cause severe swelling of the thyroid gland (goiters) and,  in extreme cases, lower IQs by 10-20 points (cretinism).  Where villages in impoverished countries can't get iodine-rich fish or salt, entire populations can succumb to cretinism.
