Near Clifden, Connemara, Ireland. These huge stones stand in farmer's fields all over Ireland, but no one knows who set them up or why. Local lore identifies them as faerie "raths" -- portals that open suddenly into the other world. They may have been used in ancient pagan rituals. No one knows. Pale & unchanging, this stone can be seen & steered to from a long way out by fishermen coming into Clifden harbor. In a cold twilight with a storm approaching, that might be religion enough. |
