A Not Dot Com Picture

Frying bread, Madagasgar
(photo & text by John Rae)

Early on our first morning in the capitol city Antananarivo I found these boys running their family's food stand. They were frying batter-dipped pieces of French bread in some kind of oil. These semi-doughnuts are a morning staple for the Malagasy. I chickened out when they offered to let me try one.

I hadn't yet found the balance for this trip between being open enough to not miss anything and guarded enough to not be taken advantage of (or, in this case, get sick).  Later in the trip I grew to like the fried bread.
