Madagasgar village girls: photo by John Rae

Last November I went to Madagascar  to document several successful UNICEF nutrition and sanitation projects.  An island off  the east coast of Africa, Madagasgar is a constitutional democracy of 13 million people. The population is  descended from Indian, Malaysian, and African travelers who settled the island.

I photographed these girls in Valtromandry, a village on the Indian Ocean that boasts a new well and education programs. The girls were part of a group of villagers who came out to sing songs of welcome . A pack of about 100 kids never got more than 10 feet away from us the entire day, so there was ample opportunity to grab these shots.
